The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

Injury RTC - Around 1pm on Sunday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury at the junction of Roberts Avenue and Derwent Lane in Devonshire. It appears that a car was traveling north along Roberts Avenue and a pedal cyclist was traveling east along Derwent Lane when the vehicles collided at the junction. The car received relatively minor front end damage. The pedal cyclist, a 7 year old Devonshire boy, received a broken leg and was taken to KEMH for treatment. The driver of the car, a 52 year old Pembroke man, was not injured. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Injury RTC - Around 8:55am on Friday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Middle Road in Devonshire near the junction with Marsh Lane . It appears that a SUV and a motorcycle were traveling west on Middle Road, with the SUV in front of the motorcycle. The SUV came to a stop; however the motorcycle was unable to stop in time and collided with the rear of the SUV. The rider of the motorcycle, a 30 year old Hamilton parish woman, sustained injuries to her left hand and was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The driver of the SUV, a 42 year old St. George’s woman, was not injured.

The Bermuda Police Service wishes to clarify and place in context the comments attributed to Assistant Commissioner Wright in an article in the Wednesday July 22nd edition of The Royal Gazette. The Bermuda Police Service would like to provide reassurance that the Commissioner and the Minister of Labour, Home Affairs & Housing continue to work together on this issue and there is no intention to introduce legislation regarding gangs without full consultation with the Bermuda Police Service. 

Update - Recent Firearms Incidents

Chief Inspector Antoine Daniels, Officer in Charge of the Serious Crime Unit - The Bermuda Police Service wishes to provide a brief update regarding the progress of the investigation into the shooting which occurred recently. About 3pm on Wednesday 22nd July 2009, Police officers attended the area of Khyber Heights/Pass, Warwick after receiving information that a man had been shot and injured.

Arrest on Suspicion of Impaired Driving - Around 12:50am today, Police were on mobile patrol traveling along Frog Lane in Devonshire when they observed a car traveling north on Frog Lane in an erratic manner. The officers then signaled the vehicle to stop on Palmetto Road. The driver, a 58 year old Devonshire woman, was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Burglary - Around 12:55am today, Police attended a reported burglary at a Railway Trail, Southampton residence. On arrival officers spoke with the complainant who stated that sometime between midnight and 12:30am, an unknown culprit gained entry into her home. The culprit stole a wallet containing a quantity of cash and personal items. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Shooting in Warwick

Around 3pm today, Police responded to a report of a shooting in the Khyber Pass/Spice Hill Road, Warwick area. The victim, a 25 year old Warwick man, is currently at KEMH receiving treatment for a non-life threatening injury. An active investigation into this incident is underway. Police are appealing for anyone with any information about this matter to contact 295-0011 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 1-800-623-8477.

July 22 - Daily Report

Assault - Around 5:45pm on Tuesday, Police received a report of an assault at a Lightbourn Drive, Warwick residence. Details about what occurred are unclear; however, it appears that two young men were involved in a physical altercation. The victim, an 18 year old Devonshire man, received facial injuries and was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. He is currently recovering on a general ward. An 18 year old Sandys parish man was subsequently arrested in connection with this incident. Inquiries are ongoing.
