Update: Sudden Death of Diver - The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 55 year old Paul Latham of New Hampshire, USA. Mr. Latham, a visitor to the island, was diving with two other individuals in the waters off of Castle Harbour in St. George's around 1:30pm Sunday, January 13th when he came into difficulty and began a rapid ascent to the surface.

Mr. Latham was placed aboard a private dive vessel which was met and escorted by a marine police vessel to Ordnance Island. A waiting ambulance transported the victim to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:42pm by an on call doctor.

Marine Police and Fisheries responded to a report of a diving incident that took place in the waters off of Castle Harbour in St. George's around 1:30pm Sunday, January 13th. It appears that a man was diving with two other individuals in the aforementioned area when he came into difficulty and began a rapid ascent to the surface. He was placed aboard a private dive vessel and that vessel was met by an emergency service vessel and the man was then taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No further information will be given until the next of kin is notified.

Two Vehicle Collision in Smith’s Parish - Around 1:30am on Saturday, January 12th police officers attended a reported two vehicle damage only collision near the junction of Middle Road and North Shore Road in Smith’s parish. It appears that a car and a SUV were being driven along Middle Road when the vehicles collided. There were no reported injuries however the car driver, a 28 year old Southampton man, was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. Both vehicles received extensive front end damage. Inquiries into this collision are ongoing and a court appearance for the car driver is anticipated in due course.

Central CAT Assist With Pembroke Park Clean Up

On Saturday the 12th of January 2013 officers from the Central Community Action Team joined local residents and volunteers to assist in a clean-up of the Parsons Road playground and surrounding areas organised by Keep Bermuda Beautiful (K.B.B.) and its Executive Director Ms. Anne Hyde.

Motorcycle Collision in Smith’s Parish - Around 8:30pm on Thursday, January 10th police and first responders attended a reported single vehicle motorcycle collision on Middle Road in Smith’s parish near the junction with Verdmont Road. The motorcycle rider, a 29 year old St. George’s man and his pillion passenger, a 4 year old St. George’s boy were injured. Members of the public as well as emergency services promptly came to their assistance and both victims were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. Their injuries were not considered to be serious and at last check both victims were in stable condition. Inquiries into this collision are ongoing.

Former Commissioner of Police George Duckett Memorial Rugby

Reserve Police Welcome Eleven New Officers

During a recent ceremony held at 7:30pm Wednesday, December 12th 2012 in the Prospect Police Recreation Club, the Bermuda Reserve Police inducted eleven new Reserve Constables, promoted four serving Reserve Constables to Sergeant and acknowledged a retiring Reserve Inspector for 25 years of service.

Two Vehicle Collision - Around 6:25pm on Wednesday, January 9th police and first responders attended a reported two vehicle collision at the junction of St. David’s Road and Clarke’s Hill in St. George’s. It appears that a motorcycle was being ridden along St. David’s Road and a car was exiting Clarke’s Hill when the vehicles collided at the junction. The motorcycle rider, a 31 year old St. George’s man was injured, taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment and later released. There were no other injuries reported; however both vehicles were damaged. Inquiries into this collision are ongoing.

Update: Investigation Into Suspicious Envelope at Airport - On Thursday 3rd January 2013 following a call to the L.F. Wade International Airport, emergency services attended to a report of a suspicious envelope that had been delivered by regular mail.

Initial reports had suggested that the envelope contained a letter threatening Bermuda and the Bermuda Government, as well as a powdery substance. The envelope was forensically examined and no traces of any toxic or other substances were found. The letter was penned by an anonymous person based in Hong Kong.

Investigation Into Fatal Collision Ongoing - The investigation into the fatal collision that claimed the life of 51 year old Andrew Peniston is ongoing. So far a few witnesses have assisted with the inquiry; however any other persons that may have been in the North Shore Road, Barkers Hill Devonshire area around 12:10am Sunday, January 6th are encouraged to come forward. In addition, anyone who was with Mr. Peniston immediately prior to this fatal collision or has information on his whereabouts during the evening of Saturday, January 5th should contact PC Roger Fox directly at the Roads Policing Unit on 247-1157.
