As part of an ongoing proactive police operation to address gun crime, armed officers attended a residence on Seawall Drive, Boaz Island, Sandys Parish at about 11am on Monday 28th January, 2013 to effect a search.
As police arrived a man bolted from the residence clutching what is believed to be a firearm. A search to locate the man was commenced. However, he remains at large. Three other persons were arrested at the residence and are in police custody. A quantity of drugs and ammunition was seized from the house.
Reported Serious Single Vehicle Collision - Around 8:30pm on Sunday, January 27th police and first responders attended a reported serious single vehicle collision at the junction of Southside Road, Longfield Road and Westcott Road in St. George’s.
It appears that a motorcycle was being ridden along Southside Road when a collision occurred as the rider, a 49 year old Devonshire man, attempted to negotiate a round-a-bout at the junction.
A second man has been arrested in connection with the Belvin’s Variety double murder investigation and the Bermuda Police Service is continuing our appeal for persons to come forward and assist the police in bringing these murderers to justice.
It is important to note that an arrest does not mean the matter is closed, and we urgently need people to come forward with any information that can assist.
The Bermuda Police Service will host a Commissioner's Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, January 31st at 6:30pm in St. Paul’s Centennial Hall at the corner of Court & Victoria Street, Pembroke.
This event will give the public an opportunity to hear the current strategies that the police are using to tackle crime as well as ask any questions about policing in our community.
Reported Serious Collision in Paget - Around 5:10pm on Saturday, January 26th police and first responders attended a reported serious three vehicle collision at the junction of Harbour Road and Salt Kettle Road in Paget. It appears that a car and a motorcycle were traveling along Harbour Road and another motorcycle was exiting Salt Kettle Road when all three vehicles collided.
The rider of one of the motorcycles involved, a 31 year old Sandys parish man, was seriously injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. At last check he was in the Intensive Care Unit in critical condition.
Double Murder Investigation Ongoing - The 21 year old Sandys parish man arrested at 4pm Thursday, January 24th in connection with the murder of Haile Outerbridge and Ricco Furbert at Belvin’s Variety in Pembroke remains in police custody pending further enquiries.
Detectives continue to appeal for anyone who was in the Curving Avenue, Happy Valley Road Pembroke area between 8:50pm & 9:10pm Wednesday, January 23rd that may have seen a group of men travelling on 2 - 3 motorcycles.
Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro - At about 9pm on Wednesday 23rd January, 2013, the Bermuda Police Service received 911 calls of two men having been shot inside the Belvin's grocery store located on Happy Valley Road, Pembroke.
I can formally confirm that both men succumbed to their injuries as indicated last night by Superintendent Field-Lament and the two victims in this crime are:-
Around 9pm on Wednesday, January 23rd police officers responded to a confirmed firearm incident at Belvin's Variety store on Happy Valley Road in Pembroke. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered two injured men inside the store. They were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where shortly thereafter they were pronounced dead.
Members of the Serious Crime Unit are now investigating this double homicide and are appealing for anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the Happy Valley Road, Pembroke area to contact 247-1739 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.
During 2012 the number of collisions reported to Police has decreased by 6.5% to 1,837 compared to 2011's total of 1,956. This also reflects a decrease over 2010's figure of 2,211.
There were 819 injury collisions reported, lower than 2011's figure of 852 and lower than 2010's figure of 832. As a result 951 persons were injured, 645 locals were slightly, 144 seriously, 150 tourists slightly and 12 seriously injured.
Advisory: Appropriate Use of 911 - The Bermuda Police Service would like to remind the public that the 911 emergency telephone number is only to be used for emergency situations where assistance is required urgently.
Dispatchers for first responders continue to receive calls from members of the public via 911 reporting non-emergency incidents that do not require urgent assistance. These types of phone calls to 911 are unnecessary and can cause a delay in responding to genuine emergency calls.
