Road Traffic Collision Statistics For 2012

During 2012 the number of collisions reported to Police has decreased by 6.5% to 1,837 compared to 2011's total of 1,956. This also reflects a decrease over 2010's figure of 2,211.

There were 819 injury collisions reported, lower than 2011's figure of 852 and lower than 2010's figure of 832. As a result 951 persons were injured, 645 locals were slightly, 144 seriously, 150 tourists slightly and 12 seriously injured.

A total of 3,019 locals and 195 tourists were involved in collisions in 2012 compared to 2011's totals of 3,190 and 219 respectively. There were 478 single vehicle collisions, the highest proportion of which was 176 four or more wheeled vehicles.

Police attended the scene of 84 collisions where drink or drugs were suspected as being the cause; 4.5% of the total number of collisions reported. 86 arrests were made on suspicion of impaired driving. There were 9 road fatalities during 2012 and 2011. The 9 road fatalities are not included in the above 819 injury collisions.
