Around 3:20am on Saturday, October 8th police and first responders attended a confirmed firearm incident in the North Shore Road, Devonshire area. A Devonshire man in his 20s sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. As a result, officers cordoned off the scene and conducted a thorough search of the area which resulted in items of interest being recovered which will be forensically examined.
At 11am on Friday, October 7th the Hamilton Police Station was officially opened by H.E. the Governor Sir Richard Gozney and
the Minister for National Security the Hon. Wayne Perinchief. Also on hand were Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva, Deputy Commissioner Mike Jackman, Assistant Commissioners Paul Wright and David Mirfield as well as other senior police officers and members of the media.
A Pembroke man in his 20s is currently in custody in connection with the confirmed firearm incident that occurred around 2:20pm on Wednesday, October 5th at South Round-a-bout in Paget.
Detectives are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and are interested in speaking with any members of the public who were in the vicinity, particularly anyone who was traveling along Trimingham Road or South Road in Paget at the time or anyone that may have been negotiating the round-a-bout during the incident.
As part of Police Week 2011, seven young people were chosen to be ‘Commissioners for a Day’ which was the prize for
winning an annual essay and art competition held by the Bermuda Police Service for primary and middle school students across the island. As Police Week 2011’s theme is ‘Policing in the Community’ the students were asked to produce an essay or piece of artwork that captured their interpretation of police officers working in the community. Around 2:20pm on Wednesday, police responded to a confirmed firearm incident at South Round-a-bout near the junction of South Road and Trimingham Road in Paget. Forensic evidence found in the area suggested that a firearm had been discharged; however no one has reported being injured. An active investigation into this incident is underway. Traffic was initially diverted away from the area while investigators examined the scene, but traffic has since been allowed to flow normally.
Despite inclement weather that cancelled the police dynamic displays, the Bermuda Police Service held a Seniors Tea at 12
noon on Tuesday, October 4th as part of the Police Week 2011 celebrations. The event recognizing the island’s senior citizens was well attended and those gathered were served by police staff while enjoying food, music by Mr. Gene Steede and his band, as well as prizes won by correctly answering trivia questions from Station Duty Officer Linda Mienzer.
Each year during Police Week an awards ceremony is held, recognizing police officers, support staff, our community partners
and members of the public for their exemplary actions during the year. This year's event was well attended by dignitaries including H.E. the Governor Sir Richard Gozney, Minister of National Security the Hon. Wayne Perinchief, Lt. Col. Brian Gonsalves, Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Regiment, Lt. Col. Edward Lamb, Commissioner of Corrections and the Police Chaplain Dr. Bishop Duncan.
Confirmed Firearm Incident in Pembroke - Around 12:45pm on Sunday, police responded to a confirmed firearm incident near the junction of St. Monica’s Road and The Glebe Road in Pembroke. Forensic evidence found in the area suggested that a firearm had been discharged; however no one has reported being injured. An active investigation into this incident is underway.
On Sunday, October 2nd at 10am an inter faith service was held at the Police Recreation Club in Prospect, Devonshire. The
event, designed to recognize the diverse religious beliefs of officers and support staff of the Bermuda Police Service, was well attended by police officers, their families and dignitaries such as the Deputy Governor David Arkley, the Premier, the Hon. Paula Cox, Minister of National Security the Hon. Wayne Perinchief, U.S. Consul General Grace Shelton and Chief Justice Richard Ground.
Police Week 2011 started at 10am on Saturday, October 1st with the Police Gymkhana. The popular community event saw a
good turnout despite the predicted weather with the approach of Hurricane Ophelia. Some young people and their parents even arrived before 10am to get an early start to the festivities.
