The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that on Thursday 9th December an autopsy was performed on the body of Mr. Hugh Melwood, a 35 year old Jamaican National. Several pellets which contained what is believed to be a quantity of controlled drug were recovered from within the body. It is suspected that they may have contributed to his death. The deceased recently returned to Bermuda from an overseas trip.
Injury RTC - Around 10:20am on Friday, Police and first responders attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Parsons Road in Pembroke. Details about the collision are unclear at this time; however a pedal cycle and a motorcycle were involved. The male pedal cyclist and the female motorcyclist were both injured and apparently taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. The road was temporarily closed off while inquiries into the incident were being conducted but it has now been re-opened. A further update will be given when more information is available.
Confirmed Firearm Incident in Pembroke - Around 9pm on Wednesday, Police responded to a reported firearm incident in the Crane Lane area of North Shore Road, Pembroke. It appears that two men on a motorcycle confronted and discharged a firearm at another man who was on foot in the area. There were no reported injuries. However, upon arrival in the area Police Officers arrested a 30 year old man in connection with the matter and a quantity of suspected controlled drugs was seized. Evidence was also found to confirm that a firearm had been discharged. An active investigation into this incident is underway.
The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that a serving police officer has been arrested as a result of an investigation into allegations of internal corruption. The officer has been suspended from duty while the investigation is being conducted, but no further comment can be made while the investigation remains active and open.
Damage Only RTC - Around 6:05am on Wednesday, Police responded to a reported single vehicle damage only collision on South Road in Paget in the vicinity of the Coral Beach Club. It appears that a car was traveling along South Road when the driver, a 39 year old Southampton man, lost control. As a result the vehicle went over an embankment. The driver was not injured; however the car received moderate damage.
Yesterday 26 year old Michael Eugene Smith pled guilty in Magistrates’ Court to two counts of theft relating to an April 20th 2010 incident at a Pembroke restaurant. It was revealed in court that Mr. Smith was arrested on suspicion of stealing from two restaurant employees. On Monday he admitted taking items from a purse as well as an I-Pod with earphones from a jacket in the restaurant’s storage room while at the premises as a beverage deliveryman. As a result Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner sentenced the 26 year old to two 3 month prison sentences to run concurrently.
It appears that the recent burglaries in the Mount Hill, Mount Langton Crescent Pembroke area and the Friswells Road, Devonshire area may be linked and a sole culprit may be responsible. We believe this same culprit may also be responsible for the recent burglary of a Pembroke guest property where a visitor was slightly injured after confronting an intruder in his guest room.
The suspect is believed to be a light skinned male, approximately 5’9” - 6’ tall of slim build. He may be in his late teens or early 20s.
The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

At 12:10pm on Monday, Police responded to a report of a burglary at a South Road, Southampton residence. From the initial investigation it would appear that four men gained entry into the home, with two of the men brandishing what appeared to be firearms. The occupant was not injured and the intruders fled the scene on foot. The police are looking into a number of potential motives for the attack. The suspects are described as black men in their late teens/early 20s of slim build, wearing helmets and blue jeans. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
Update: Sudden Death - The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 35 year old Hugh Melwood, a Jamaican national. Mr. Melwood was found in an unresponsive state inside a Union Street, Pembroke residence around 5:40am on Saturday and subsequently pronounced dead at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. Inquiries into this matter are ongoing and an autopsy is anticipated in due course.
