Bermuda Police Service Host Senior UKCOT Police Officers

The United Kingdom Caribbean Overseas Territories (UKCOT) and Bermuda often collaborate to find joint training 
opportunities in order to reduce costs and share best practices. The Bermuda Police Service was pleased this week to be able to host three senior police officers from Montserrat and Anguilla who joined a number of Bermuda Police Service officers to take part in a Firearms Incident Commanders Course held between 11th and 15th July at Police Headquarters in Prospect.
On Thursday (14th July) the officers were invited to Government House by His Excellency Sir Richard Gozney. The Governor met Mr. Steve Foster, Commissioner of the Royal Montserrat Police Force; Superintendent Charles Thompson, also from Montserrat; and Superintendent Elliott Forbes of the Royal Anguilla Police Force. Also in attendance at Government House were Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva, Deputy Commissioner Mike Jackman, Assistant Commissioner Paul Wright and Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of National Security, Mr. Marc Telemaque. Sudden Death of David Jevon Saunders - The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 33 year old David Jevon Saunders. Around 11:10am on Wednesday, police and first responders attended a reported medical emergency at a Valley Lane, Sandys parish residence where Mr. Saunders was found in an unresponsive state inside the home. Despite CPR at the scene and being rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, he was subsequently pronounced dead at 12:03pm. Foul play is not suspected and an autopsy is anticipated in due course. The Bermuda Police Service extends condolences to the family & friends of Mr. Saunders.

Sudden Death - Around 11:10am on Wednesday, police and first responders attended a reported medical emergency at a Valley Lane, Sandys parish residence. A 33 year old Sandys parish man was found in an unresponsive state inside the home. Despite CPR at the scene and being rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, he was subsequently pronounced dead. No further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified. Foul play is not suspected and an autopsy is anticipated in due course.

Handbag Snatch - Around 3pm on Monday, police attended a reported handbag snatch on North Shore Road in Hamilton parish near the junction with Wilkinson Avenue. It appears that two visitors were riding a rental cycle along North Shore Road when an unknown man on a motorcycle took a bag from the rental cycle’s basket as he rode past. The visitors were not injured. The suspect’s vehicle was described as a black motorcycle with some yellow and red sections. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

The Commissioner sent a personal email today to each member of the Bermuda Police Service. He expressed disappointment of having been shown photographs this weekend of police officers in uniform in staged, uncomplimentary poses. He acknowledged that similar photographs of members of the public are appearing on social networks such as Facebook, but stated that the practice has no place in the Bermuda Police Service. The Police Code of Conduct requires members to conduct themselves at all times in a professional manner and with professional decorum. The Commissioner has instructed that enquiries are made and the officers involved are held accountable for their actions.

Burglary - Around 10:20am on Saturday, police attended a reported burglary at a St. George’s restaurant. It appears that sometime between 11:30pm on Friday and 9:45am on Saturday, an unknown culprit or culprits gained entry into the premises. The culprit(s) stole a quantity of alcohol including bottles of ‘Moscato’ wine, ‘Smirnoff’ vodka, ‘Grey Goose’ vodka and ‘Hennessy’ cognac. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Three Vehicle Collision - Around 5:15pm on Saturday, police attended a reported three vehicle collision resulting in injury at the junction of Reid Street, Spurling Hill and Cavendish Road in Pembroke. It appears that two cars and a SUV collided at the junction. As a result one of the car drivers, a 28 year old woman, was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of relatively minor injuries. The driver of the other car and the driver of the SUV were not injured. All three vehicles were damaged. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Handbag Snatch - Around 4:15 pm on Thursday July 7, police attended a reported handbag snatch on North Shore Road in Hamilton Parish near the junction with Coney Island Road. It appears that two visitors were riding separate rental cycles along North Shore Road when the male visitor was accosted by two unknown men on a motorcycle. As a result, a collision occurred. One of the suspects managed to escape on foot with the visitor’s knapsack. The other suspect rode off. The male visitor sustained minor injuries from the collision and was treated at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. The female visitor was not injured.

Burglary - Around 7:40pm on Wednesday July 6, 2011, police responded to a reported burglary at a Trinity Church Road, Hamilton Parish residence. It was ascertained that sometime between 10pm on Tuesday July 5 and 7pm on Wednesday July 6, unknown culprits gained entry into the home while it was unoccupied and took a refrigerator, dishwasher, two televisions and a treadmill. Investigations are ongoing and police are encouraging anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area to contact DC Anthony Bartley on the main police line at 295-0011.
Sudden Death of Bilal Furqan

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 41 year old Bilal Furqan who died as a result of a cliff jumping incident that took place at Admiralty House Park. The circumstances are that first responders attended an incident that took place at Admiralty House Park beach area at 5:37pm on Saturday, July 2nd. It appears that Mr. Furqan was jumping off the rocks into the water when he was knocked unconscious. As a result he was pulled to the beach by family members and members of the public. An off duty EMT and nurse began to perform CPR and they managed to get Mr. Furqan breathing, however he remained unconscious. The pair continued CPR until the paramedics arrived.
