Sudden Death of John Pitt

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 25 year old John Pitt of Pembroke. Mr. Pitt’s lifeless body was found around 2:30pm Thursday, June 14th at a Shaw Wood Crescent, Pembroke residence. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by an on call doctor.

An autopsy has been conducted by a forensic pathologist, and the findings have been shared with the family of Mr. Pitt.

The results of the autopsy are subject to consideration by the Coroner, thus will not be released publicly. The Bermuda Police Service extends condolences to the family & friends of Mr. Pitt at this tragic time.

Impaired Drivers - Around 2:30am on Monday June 18th, police were on mobile patrol along St. David’s Road in St. George’s when they observed an SUV that was travelling erratically. Officers stopped the vehicle and approached the driver, a 25 year old Devonshire man who appeared to be intoxicated. He was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and detained in police custody as a result. A court appearance is anticipated in due course.

Deputy Commissioner Awarded Overseas Territories Police Medal

The Bermuda Police Service congratulates Deputy Commissioner Mike Jackman, who was awarded the Overseas Territories Police Medal (formerly the Colonial Police Medal) for Meritorious Service in the recently released 2012 Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Deputy Police Commissioner Jackman arrived from Barbados in 1982 and commenced his initial training. He has worked in many areas of policing including all three police stations, Traffic, Narcotics and Community Policing. He has also served as Chairman of the Bermuda Police Association from 1996-1999.

Speeding Tickets Issued - Officers from the Roads Policing Unit conducted laser speed checks in both the western and eastern parishes during Wednesday June 13th and Thursday June 14th. As a result, over 40 tickets were issued, with several motorists ticketed for speeds in the 60 and 70 kph range.

Around 2:30pm on Thursday June 14th, police and first responders attended a report of an unresponsive male at a Shaw Wood Crescent, Pembroke residence.

As a result, the lifeless body of a 25 year old Pembroke man was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by an on call doctor.

There does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances at this time, however an autopsy is anticipated. No further information regarding the deceased will be released until the next of kin have been notified.

Update: Second Road Fatality for 2012

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 37 year old Joseph Footitt. Mr. Footitt, a visitor from London U.K., was pronounced dead at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, June 13th after the rental cycle he was riding collided with a car around 3:35pm that day along Harbour Road in Paget near the junction with Manse Road.

His 36 year old wife and pillion passenger, also from London U.K., was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and later released. There were no other injuries reported.

Second Road Fatality for 2012

Around 3:35pm on Wednesday June 13th, police and first responders were dispatched to a serious road traffic collision on Harbour Road in Paget between the junctions of Manse Road and Chapel Road.

It appears that a rental cycle and a car were traveling along Harbour Road when they collided. The rider of the rental cycle, a 37 year old U.K. man was seriously injured and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

The authority that is set to expire at 11:59pm on Wednesday 13th June, 2012 has been extended under the authority of Acting Police Superintendent Sean Field-Lament for an additional one month period. This extension notice & map will appear in both the Royal Gazette and Bermuda Sun newspapers.

Police Acknowledge Supreme Court Ruling in Zegelis Drug Case

Acting Superintendent Sean Field-Lament - The Bermuda Police Service welcomes the Supreme Court’s ruling and sentencing in the Zegelis case, which will hopefully send a strong message and act as a deterrent.

This successful outcome underscores the ongoing partnership between law enforcement agencies both locally and overseas to combat illicit drug activity.

We would also like to acknowledge the hard work of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions that diligently brought this matter to a conclusion.

Sudden Death of Misael Guirigay

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 42 year old Misael Guirigay.

Mr. Guirigay, a Philippines national, was discovered in an unresponsive state around 2:30pm on Friday, June 8th at a Southcote Road, Paget residence. He was subsequently pronounced dead at 2:55pm Friday by an on call doctor at the scene. There were no suspicious circumstances reported.

An autopsy was conducted on Monday, June 11th and the findings verified that Mr. Guirigay succumbed due to a pre-existing medical condition.
