At 11:34am today, Police responded to a report of a sudden death that took place at a Devon Spring Road, Devonshire residence. A 49 year old Canadian man (guest worker) was found in an unresponsive state inside the residence. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. No further information will be released until the next of kin has been notified (the deceased’s relatives are overseas). Inquiries into this incident are underway.
Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, Serious Crime Unit - The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that charges have been laid before the courts in relation to the shooting of Renee Kuchler & Shaki Minors outside the Southside Cinema on Friday 13th November, 2009.
Members of the public will recall that Mr. Minors & his girlfriend were shot multiple times as they were getting into their car, having just left the movies on this date.
Handbag Snatch - Around 11:45pm on Thursday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch on Scaur Hill in Sandys parish. It appears that around 11:40pm that day, the complainant a 52 year old Quebec woman (Canadian visitor) was the pillion passenger on a rental cycle traveling toward Dockyard when two unknown men on a motorcycle rode up from behind, took a black duffle bag from the rental cycle’s basket and made good their escape heading east. The duffle bag contained personal items including a quantity of cash and a cellular phone. The complainant and her male companion (rental cycle rider) were not injured. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
Burglary - Around 7pm on Wednesday, Police received a report of a burglary at a White Sands Road, Paget residence. The complainants stated that sometime between 8am and 6:55pm that day, an unknown culprit gained entry into their home while it was unoccupied. The culprit stole a quantity of cash. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is announcing the introduction of TASER as a less-lethal use of force option in the list of approved defensive weapons being carried by police officers.
“TASER” is the manufacturer’s name for an Electronic Control Device (ECD) that is widely used by law enforcement agencies across the world as a less-lethal option of defensive force.
Burglary - Around 3pm on Tuesday, Police received a report of a burglary at a Park View Lane, Devonshire residence. The complainant stated that sometime between 12:30pm and 2:50pm that day, an unknown culprit gained entry into her home while it was unoccupied. The culprit stole a 50” Panasonic flat screen TV and a Dell laptop computer. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
The total for all crime in the first quarter of 2010 decreased by -119 offences or -9.13% compared to fourth quarter of 2009. In comparison to the same period last year (first quarter of 2009), the first quarter of 2010 has decreased by -21 offences or by -1.74%. The total for the first quarter of 2010 was 1,185. The long term trend of all crime in Bermuda is stable with the most recent period of the first quarter 2010 the 4th lowest quarterly crime figure since the first quarter of 2000. The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Road Victim Identified - The Bermuda Police Service would like to thank those members of the public who have come forward regarding the fatal road traffic collision that occurred around 1:15am Saturday on North Shore Road in Devonshire near the Mid Atlantic Boat Club involving a car and a pedestrian.
The victim has now been identified as a 41 year old Southampton man. No further information will be released at this time until his next of kin have been notified.
Witness Appeal, Fatal RTC - Police are continuing to appear for witnesses to the fatal road traffic collision that occurred around 1:15am Saturday on North Shore Road in Devonshire near the Mid Atlantic Boat Club involving a car and a pedestrian. Details about how the collision occurred remain unclear and the identity of the male pedestrian victim is still unknown at this time. He is described as a dark skinned man of stocky build, approximately 30 – 50 years old, wearing a black hooded jacket, beige/khaki pants and new black & white Adidas sneakers.
