Robbery at Hitching Post in Somerset

Around 8:30am on Wednesday, December 28th police attended a reported robbery at the Hitching Post on Middle Road in Sandys parish. It appears that around 8:10am an unknown group of men gained entry into the premises, brandishing what appeared to be firearms. The culprits made good their escape with a quantity of cash. No one was injured.

Update: Sudden Death - The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 18 year old Kevin Gonsalves Ledo of Pembroke. Around 11:45am on Saturday, December 24th police responded to a reported industrial accident at a Smiths Avenue, Warwick residence. It appears that Mr. Ledo was working as a landscaper on the property when he received an electrical shock. He was given CPR by EMTs at the scene before being taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, where he was subsequently pronounced dead at 1:20pm Saturday by an on call physician.

Sudden Death

Around 11:45am on Saturday, December 24th police responded to a reported industrial accident at a Smiths Avenue, Warwick residence. It appears that a landscaper was carrying out work on the property when he received an electrical shock. On police arrival EMTs were already at the scene performing CPR on the victim, an 18 year old Pembroke man. The victim was then taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, where he was subsequently pronounced dead at 1:20pm by an on call physician. There does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances; however an autopsy is anticipated and inquiries are ongoing.

Two Men Arrested Following East Avenue Shooting

Detectives from the Serious Crime Unit continue to investigate the shooting of a 38 year old man outside his residence on East Avenue, Southampton – during the early hours of the evening on Wednesday 21st December. Two men have been taken into custody regarding this matter – a 26 year old male from Pembroke, and a 22 year old male from Paget parish. These men remain in police custody.

Collision - At 10:30am on Thursday December 22nd, police responded to a reported collision on Queen Street in Pembroke between three vehicles; a motorcycle, a taxi and an SUV. It appears that the motorcycle was travelling along Queen Street when the SUV exited a parking bay and the vehicles collided. As a result, the motorcycle also collided with a taxi parked nearby. The motorcycle was extensively damaged however, the rider of the motorcycle, a 20 year old Southampton man received minor injuries. The SUV and taxi received relatively minor damages. There were no other reported injuries. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.

Impaired Driving - Around 10:30pm on Wednesday December 21st, police officers on mobile patrol observed a motorcycle travelling along Angle Street in Pembroke in an erratic manner. As the motorcycle came to a stop at the junction of Court Street and Angle Street, it fell over. After assisting the rider believed to be a 58 year old Pembroke man, off the ground, officers arrested him on suspicion of impaired driving. He was later released on police bail. A court appearance is anticipated in due course.

Remembering Former Detective Inspector Milton Marsh CPM

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva - On behalf of the officers and staff of The Bermuda Police Service I extend sincere condolences to the family of former Detective Inspector Milton Marsh. I had the pleasure to meet Inspector Marsh on his 102nd birthday in February this year as well as some members of his family. I noted how sharp his memory was of his policing career and it was interesting to hear him relate his experiences.

Shooting on East Avenue in Southampton

Around 7:05pm on Wednesday, December 21st police received a report of a shooting at an East Avenue, Southampton residence. A 38 year old Southampton man was injured as a result and taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. The victim’s injuries are not considered life threatening at this time.

Rest Homes Receive Serious Crime Unit Donations

This year, the officers in the Serious Crime Unit decided to forego giving and receiving gifts at Christmas time. Instead, support staff member Ms. Monique Heyliger identified two worthy causes for some Christmas charity – the Lorraine Rest Home in Warwick, and the Francis Telford Nursing Home in Paget. She worked tirelessly to obtain the monies, prepare the packages, and wrap them up in advance of the donations.

Donations were collected amongst the detectives in the unit, for a total of over $700, in order to provide the residents of these two homes with towels, soaps, wash cloths, bed sheets and other essential items for everyday living.

Impaired Driving - Around 2:30pm on Tuesday December 20th, police attended a reported collision on York Street in St. George’s. It appears that a bus was stationary at a bus stop and a motorcycle was travelling along York Street when the collision occurred. There were no reported injuries. The rider of the motorcycle, a 49 year old St. George’s man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and released on police bail. A court appearance is anticipated in due course.
