Road Closure

Due to this afternoon's road traffic collision involving a government trash truck and three other vehicles, Middle Road in Southampton between the junction with Church Road and the junction with South Road will be closed to all traffic until further notice. This is to assist Works & Engineering personnel who are cleaning the road of oil and other fluids left by the vehicles involved. It is anticipated that the area of affected road will be re-opened Tuesday morning. In the meantime, motorists are encouraged to heed the traffic diversions in place at the Church Road and South Road junctions.

First responders (Bermuda Police Service, Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service and Ambulance) attended a multi-vehicle collision that took place at 2:40pm today on Barnes Corner in Southampton. It appears that a government trash truck was traveling east on Middle Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with two cars and a SUV traveling in the opposite direction. The drivers of the three vehicles, two women and a man, escaped with minor injuries. The trash truck had 3 occupants – two escaped injury while the driver was trapped inside the vehicle. It took Fire & Rescue Service personnel around 20 minutes to extricate the individual.

Fatal RTC - The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 23 year old Dereiko Simons of Sandys parish. The Bermuda Police Service extends sincere condolences to the family & friends of Mr. Simons, who was involved in a collision that occurred around 11:40pm Saturday on Somerset Road in Sandys parish near the junction with Morgan Hill. It appears that Mr. Simons was riding a motorcycle traveling west on Somerset Road when he collided with a car traveling in the opposite direction  Mr. Simons sustained multiple injuries including serious internal injuries, a head injury and two broken legs.

Fatal RTC - At 11:40pm on Saturday, Police received a report of a serious road traffic collision in the area of Somerset Road and Scaur Hill Drive in Sandys parish. Details about the collision are unclear at the moment; however it appears that a car and a motorcycle were involved. As a result the rider of the motorcycle, a 23 year old Sandys parish man, received multiple injuries and was taken to KEMH via ambulance. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by an on call physician at 2:33am Sunday. Inquiries into this incident are underway. No further information will be released until the next of kin has been notified.

Arrest

Around 3:30pm today, Police were on mobile patrol in the area of Flatts Village in Smith’s parish when they came upon a 19 year old Pembroke man who is a person of interest to the Police. Officers attempted to effect an arrest but the Pembroke man managed to elude them, leading Police on a chase through the surrounding area. This resulted in a number of Police officers from different units converging on the location. The individual was taken into Police custody approximately 20 minutes later. The Bermuda Police Service would like to apologize to the public in the area that may have been inconvenienced as a result of this incident.

Injury RTC - Around 8:45pm on Thursday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Middle Road in Sandys parish near the junction with White Hill Lane involving an auxiliary cycle and a car. It appears that the car was traveling north on Middle Road and the auxiliary cycle was traveling in the opposite direction when the vehicles collided. The rider of the auxiliary cycle, a 40 year old Warwick man, sustained a possible concussion. He was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The driver of the car, a 64 year old Smith’s parish woman, was not injured. Both vehicles received damage to multiple areas.

Police Apprehend Omari Gordon

Superintendent Antoine Daniels & Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro - The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that fugitive Omari Gordon was apprehended at a Sandys parish residence earlier today. Mr. Gordon is suspected of committing a serious & reckless act by discharging a firearm in public during the early hours of Saturday, November 29th 2008, putting several lives at risk. Based on information received from the public, Police were able to locate Mr. Gordon, who is now in Police custody.

Damage Only RTC - Around 8:10pm on Wednesday, Police attended a reported single vehicle damage only road traffic collision on Happy Valley Road in Pembroke. It appears that a car was traveling east on Happy Valley Road when the driver, a 56 year old Pembroke man, lost control and collided with the fence of Pitt & Company. The Pembroke man was not injured; however the car received extensive front end damage. The fence was also damaged.

Around 12:30pm today, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Middle Road in Southampton near the junction with Rosehill Road. The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service also attended the scene. It appears that a car was traveling west on Middle Road while a car and a motorcycle were traveling in the opposite direction when the motorcycle collided with both cars. Injury RTC

At 9:45am today, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Langton Hill in Pembroke involving a van and a truck. The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service also attended the scene. It appears that the van was traveling north on Langton Hill and the truck was traveling in the opposite direction when the vehicles collided. The driver of the van, a 42 year old Southampton man, reportedly suffered a dislocated hip. He had to be extracted from his vehicle by Fire & Rescue Service personnel using specialized equipment and was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The driver of the truck, a 41 year old Hamilton parish man, was not injured.
