Press Conference to Address Recent Incidents of Anti-Social Behaviour

Mon, 2006-07-17

The Bermuda Police Service wishes to inform the public that we are fully aware of the current social environment in Bermuda. We have noticed a rise in violent confrontations between 'rival' groups in our community, with individuals using various methods to settle their differences. The primary weapons used by these individuals are bladed articles, baseball bats and to a lesser extent, firearms.

In keeping with our Mission Statement, we will ensure that both residents and visitors alike are able to live in and enjoy a safe and secure environment. To prevent any further escalation of anti-social behaviour, the Bermuda Police Service has adopted a proactive, firm and visible stance. Officers will be out in force patrolling the island, particularly in areas where the potential for anti-social behaviour exists. All available resources will be utilized, including CCTV where appropriate and an armed presence when necessary.

We are asking for the public's continued co-operation and patience, as there may be some instances where they will be temporarily inconvenienced as our officers carry out their duties maintaining law and order. Additionally, we are asking for the assistance of all parents/guardians. Please speak with your young people about responsible behaviour and continue to advise them on productive ways to resolve conflicts.

While we do not wish to curtail any summer activities, we would like the public to be aware that the Bermuda Police Service will take all necessary measures to ensure that these events are safe and secure.

We are grateful for the public's continued support and assistance with inquiries into these matters and encourage anyone with any information about these anti-social activities to contact the main Police number, 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1-800-623-8477.
