Sun, 2006-08-27

Around 2:10pm today, Police responded to a report of an industrial accident on Fairyland Road in Pembroke. The Bermuda Fire Service also attended the scene and provided medical assistance to the victim (CPR). He was then rushed from the scene via ambulance in an unresponsive state and taken to KEMH where he was pronounced dead by an on call physician at 2:42pm. No further details will be released until his next of kin have been notified. It is anticipated that an autopsy will be performed.

Fatal RTC

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 24 year old Akil Williams. He was pronounced dead at 2:50pm today at the Intensive Care Unit of KEMH by an on call physician. Mr. Williams sustained serious head injuries following a single vehicle road traffic collision on Parsons Lane in Pembroke around 8:10am on Saturday. It appears that he was riding a motorcycle traveling east on Parsons Lane when he attempted to negotiate a left hand bend in the road and lost control, ending up off the road in some nearby bushes. It is anticipated that an autopsy will be performed. The Bermuda Police Service extends its sincere condolences to the family & friends of the deceased.

The death of Akil Williams marks the 8th road traffic fatality for 2006.

Media Note: 77 road traffic collisions have occurred on Parsons Lane in Pembroke, which runs from the Palmetto Road round-a-bout to Barkers Hill, in the past 5 years – two of which were fatal road traffic collisions (Akil Williams & Ryan Burgess). It is a narrow stretch of road which is due to be assessed in the near future, in an attempt to improve the road characteristics. This matter will be brought up before the Road Safety Council & the Ministry of Works & Engineering.

It appears that many vehicles travel at high speeds through Parsons Lane, despite the road not being conducive to traveling at such speeds. In fact, around 4 this morning, a car traveling west collided with a tree on Parsons Lane in the same area, while Police were guarding the scene. The driver of the car, a 29 year old Devonshire woman, was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and detained at Hamilton Police Station after she failed the alco-analyser test. The car received extensive rear end damage; however, the driver and her passenger were not injured.
