Attempted Murder & Murder Inquiries

Wed, 2006-08-23

Inquiries into the attempted murder of a 19 year old Devonshire man and the murder of 18 year old Jason Lightbourne in the same night are continuing. We would like to assure the public that resources available within the Bermuda Police Service and outside of the Bermuda Police Service are being used in the course of both investigations.

In the investigation conducted so far into the attempted murder matter and the murder of Jason Lightbourne we have not ruled out a possible link between the two cases. In particular, in the murder of Jason Lightbourne we are satisfied as a result of the investigation to date, that it is evident that the investigation is being significantly hindered from progressing as a result of information that is being withheld despite our persistence to seek the truth.

Both investigations have been met with significant challenges. The investigating officers are firm in their belief that these challenges can be overcome with the assistance of those who directly witnessed certain events, together with the assistance of the public. A number of investigative options have been exhausted in the attempted murder and murder investigations and others will be exploited with the obvious objective of bringing the culprit in both cases to justice.

To date 3 arrests have been made in the attempted murder investigation. Three arrests have been made in the murder investigation. Inquiries around all of those men arrested continue. The investigating team is asking the public to assist us. Firstly, to those that have a positive influence over any of the young men that were in the area of Ord Road and Sylvan Dell Road in Paget at the time of the brutal murder of Jason Lightbourne, that you encourage them to step forward and provide the Police with the details of what they in fact witnessed and that the community comes together to support those young men.

We are equally interested in speaking to anyone who was in or saw the occupants of a white Daihatsu Charade sedan motorcar registered number 37814 in the City of Hamilton and central parishes in the early hours of that fateful day, Sunday, July 23, 2006 and any person who spoke to or saw Jason Lightbourne on the evening prior and morning of his murder. The Serious Crime Unit telephone number is 299-4239 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline 1-800-623-8477.
