Christmas Crime Prevention Advice

Wed, 2006-12-13

As we prepare ourselves for the joy of giving and exchanging gifts, let us not forget that the criminal element of our community is also anxiously awaiting this time of year. However, the spirit of giving is not on their minds! It's the time of year when people tend to get distracted and let their guard down. As a result they become vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. The Bermuda Police Service wants everyone to have a happy and safe holiday season. Please take note of the following holiday crime prevention tips:

At Home

Be extra cautious about locking your doors and windows when you leave the house, even if only gone for a few minutes.

When leaving home for an extended period of time, have a neighbour or family member watch your house and pick up your deliveries.

Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home.

Attending A Party

With office parties and general Christmas celebrations, pubs, restaurants and other venues are often crowded. Busy places make it easier for the sneak thief, so be alert at all times. Don't leave bags over the back of your chair and keep wallets and purses close to your body to make it more difficult for thieves. Watch your drink at all times and do not accept drinks from people you do not know!

These are just some of the crime prevention tips contained in the Christmas Holiday Crime Prevention Advisory pamphlet, which is available at all post offices and Police Stations. Also, from 11am - 2pm on Friday, December 15, 2006 Police officers and Police Cadets will be handing out the Christmas Holiday Crime Prevention Advisory pamphlet to members of the public in and around the City of Hamilton. In addition, Police officers in the east & west end of the island will be handing out the pamphlets during the course of their duties on Friday.
