At 4:45 this morning, Police attended KEMH following a report of an assault. On arrival officers spoke with the victim, a 20 year old Devonshire woman, who stated that while she was at her residence in the early hours of the morning she was awakened by the sounds of an individual trying to gain entry into her residence. The Devonshire woman went to the door to see who it was, only to notice it was a former male friend. The 24 year old man then began to force his way into her North Shore Road home. Once inside the house he began to attack the 20 year old woman, beating her about the head and body. The suspect then took a knife and cut the victim across her throat resulting in the Devonshire woman receiving a 6 inch slight laceration. The victim began to struggle with the suspect, however he eventually made good his escape on a motorcycle. It was at this time that the 20 year old woman sought refuge at a Hamilton hotel; however, minutes later the 24 year old man arrived at the hotel which resulted in hotel security staff calling the Police. As the Police were driving into the hotel property they noticed the suspect riding off and a chase ensued through the streets of Hamilton, ending with the 24 year old man falling off his motorcycle as he attempted to negotiate the junction of Reid Street and Burnaby Street in the City of Hamilton. At this point he began to make aggressive overtures to Police, chopping three Police vehicles with a machete. Eventually, officers were able to subdue the suspect who violently resisted arrest.

The 24 year old man is in Police custody and the 20 year old Devonshire woman was taken to KEMH, where she was treated and released. None of the Police officers involved received any physical injuries as a result of this incident. An investigation into this incident is underway under the guidance of Acting Inspector Cardwell.
