Shoplifting

Tue, 2005-12-13

At 2:20pm on Tuesday, a uniformed Police officer was on his lunch break at the Market Place on Church Street in the City of Hamilton when he was approached by the store's manager about a suspected shoplifter. The Police officer accompanied the store manager to the elevator, where the suspect was observed to have a knapsack in his possession containing food and a six pack of beer. When asked if he paid for the items, the man made no reply. The Police officer then informed the suspect that he was being placed under arrest on suspicion of shoplifting. At this time the suspect attempted to make good his escape by running into the store. However, the Police officer and store manager managed to grab hold of the man and a struggle ensued. The suspect, a 20 year old Pembroke man, continued to resist arrest and additional Police units were called to assist. He was subsequently arrested, taken to Hamilton Police Station and detained.
