Mon, 2006-06-19

At 6:45pm on Monday, Police attended a reported attempted handbag snatch on Harrington Sound Road in Smith's parish. On arrival officers spoke with the victims, who are visitors to the island. The couple stated that around 5pm they were riding their rental cycle on South Road near John Smith's Bay when they stopped in a bus lay by to take pictures. As they were getting back on their cycle, an unknown man rode up on a motorcycle asking if they needed directions. They declined his offer and rode away. However, as they traveled west on Harrington Sound Road an unknown man rode up behind them on a motorcycle and removed a green canvas purse from the rental cycle's basket. The victim's rental cycle and the suspect's motorcycle then collided, causing the suspect and the victims to fall to the ground. The suspect attempted to get back on his cycle and make good his escape with the purse; however, the male visitor managed to take the purse from the suspect before he made good his escape riding east. The victims sustained abrasions to their legs and arms, but declined to attend the hospital. Instead they received first aid at their guest accommodation. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the St. George's Criminal Investigation Unit on 297-1122
