Spectators Injured

Sun, 2006-06-11

Around 9pm on Sunday, Police received a report of spectators injured at the Monster Truck Show at Kindley Field in St. George's. It appears that around 8:15pm the driver of one of the trucks in the show temporarily lost control of his vehicle; but the monster truck was brought to a complete halt by using a 'kill switch' to shut off the engine before it reached the protective barriers or any of the spectators. However, some of the spectators in the truck's path ran from the oncoming vehicle and were injured in the process. A 40 year old Devonshire man sustained bruising to his left knee after he tripped and fell over a low wall; and a 44 year old Pembroke man fell after he collided with a fire hydrant sustaining bruising to the left side of his ribs. Both men were treated at the scene by St. John's Ambulance personnel. The Pembroke man was then taken to KEMH via ambulance where he was further examined and then released.

Marine Incident

Around 8:05pm on Sunday, Police attended a report of a child overboard in difficulty at Flatt's Bridge on North Shore Road in Hamilton parish. The Bermuda Fire Service and ambulance personnel were also at the scene. It appears that around 8pm the victim, a 12 year old Devonshire girl, was with other children at the dock at Flatt's Inlet, opposite the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo. She apparently slipped from the dock into the water and was overcome by the strong current in the inlet, which swept her out into Harrington Sound. A 15 year old Hamilton parish boy jumped overboard in an effort to rescue the Devonshire girl. A 35 year old Hamilton parish man then took a punt out into Harrington Sound and managed to rescue both the 12 year old girl and the 15 year old boy. However, the trio got into difficulty as the Hamilton parish man attempted to row to shore, due to the strong current. In spite of this, he eventually managed to safely navigate the punt to a nearby dock. The Devonshire girl appeared to be in good health and was subsequently taken to KEMH via ambulance where observations confirmed the initial assessment. She was then released. Police officers spoke with the parents of all the children involved and advice was given in hopes of avoiding a similar incident in the future.

Injury RTC

At 5:35pm on Sunday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Middle Road in Paget near the junction with Ord Road involving two cars. It appears that a silver Mitsubishi station wagon was traveling east on Middle Road when the driver, a 56 year old St. George's woman, lost control and crossed into the westbound lane, colliding head on with a silver Peugeot station wagon. The driver of the Peugeot station wagon, a 61 year old Warwick man, suffered a heart attack at the scene. The St. George's woman sustained a deep laceration to her right thigh. Both were taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The Warwick man was initially in the Intensive Care Unit at KEMH; but around 8 this morning he was flown to Boston, Massachusetts U.S.A. for further medical treatment. The St. George's woman is currently recovering on a general ward at KEMH. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
