Beware of Counterfeit Currency - At 8am on Sunday a complainant attended the Hamilton Police Station and reported that whilst he was driving his taxi this morning, 3 passengers paid him with what he now knows is counterfeit currency. The serial numbers are the same ones that have been showing up in recent days. Inquiries into this incent are underway.
The Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit is aware of counterfeit currency presently in circulation on the island, particularly Bermuda $100, $50, and $20 notes. The serial numbers are D/1 019625, D/2 509282, D/2 595819. Business owners, vendors and individuals alike are advised to be vigilant regarding these denominations and we ask that you take note of the individual or individuals passing these notes. The public is also encouraged to check for the incorporated security features of genuine currency such as paper quality and embedded watermarks.
Anyone with any information about incidents where counterfeit currency is being circulated is encouraged to contact the Financial Crime Unit on 295-0011. The public is also reminded that it is a criminal offence to pass on to another, possess, make or reproduce any counterfeit currency; this is punishable by up to five years in prison.
Robbery
Meantime, police responded to a report of a robbery that took place a few minutes after 5pm on Saturday on Rambling Lane in Pembroke. It appears the victim was approached by 4 males who made demands for his jewelry. The four men then set upon the victim beating him about the body with a piece of wood and also breaking a bottle over the victim’s head. The culprits then stole a piece of jewelry before they made good their escape. The victim was taken to the hospital where he was treated for lacerations to his head. Inquiries into this incident has commenced. Over the holiday period, Thursday to Sunday, there were 4 reported breaking and entering (B&E) incidents, 5 reported road traffic collisions with no injury, 8 reported road traffic collisions that resulted in injury, 2 reported robberies, 5 reported assaults and 20 persons arrested for warrants.
