Assault on Police

Around 12:30 this morning, Police were conducting a traffic diversion at the junction of North Shore Road and Trinity Church Road in Hamilton parish due to a fatal road traffic collision. A white BMW, which had earlier failed to stop, ignored Police directions and driven through a manned Police barrier, was stopped and the driver spoken to. The officer observed that there were two female passengers also in the vehicle. As the officer told the driver to turn off the car's engine and exit the vehicle the 30 year old Hamilton parish man drove straight at the officer, striking him. The officer landed on top of the BMW's front hood, with the driver increasing speed traveling east on North Shore Road and the officer hanging on to the car's hood. The 30 year old then drove the vehicle erratically side to side, in an attempt to get the officer off of the car. He continued to increase his speed and then braked suddenly, throwing the officer into the west bound lane of North Shore Road at the junction with Fractious Street. The BMW then continued traveling in an easterly direction. The car was subsequently located on Kitty's Drive in Hamilton parish. The driver was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm by impaired driving, taken to Hamilton Police Station and detained after refusing to take the alco-analyser test. The BMW was impounded. The officer sustained cuts and abrasions to his head, right hand and forearm and also injured his right hip. He was treated at KEMH for his injuries , which are not believed to be life threatening. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing.
