Attempted Robbery

Sun, 2006-11-19

Around 2am on Sunday, Police attended a reported attempted robbery on Woodbourne Avenue in Pembroke near the Oxford Guest House. On arrival officers spoke with the victim, who is a visitor to the island. The 27 year old American visitor stated that earlier he left an area establishment and was walking back to the guest house when the suspect, a 38 year old Pembroke man, approached him and attempted to take his wallet. A struggle ensued and the American visitor (who has some martial arts/self defense training) defended himself. As a result, nothing was taken from him and the suspect managed to make good his escape. However, a short time later the visitor attended KEMH for treatment of abrasions to his hands and while there, identified the suspect who had also attended the hospital for treatment of facial injuries sustained in the scuffle. The 38 year old Pembroke man was treated, released and then arrested on suspicion of robbery at the hospital. He was subsequently taken to Hamilton Police Station and detained. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Missing Purse/Theft

At 12:20pm on Sunday, Police attended a report of a missing purse/theft on South Road in Southampton near The Reefs hotel. It appears that around 12:10pm the complainant, who is a visitor to the island, was standing at the westbound bus stop near The Reefs hotel when she assisted a local female jogger who had fallen while jogging and injured herself. The 59 year old American visitor went across the road and got a taxi for the jogger, who was then taken to KEMH for treatment of a laceration to her chin. However, when the visitor returned to the bus stop, she discovered that her black & gold Ralph Lauren purse was missing. The purse contained personal items. Police are appealing for witnesses; particularly the jogger, described as a white female who is believed to be in her 40s, the taxi driver or anyone who may have been in the area at the time, to contact the Somerset Criminal Investigation Unit on 234-1010.
