High Speed Chase

Tue, 2007-01-30

Around 3:40pm on Tuesday, Police were on mobile patrol traveling north on Trimingham Road in Pembroke near the North Round-a-bout when they observed a motorcycle traveling south on Trimingham Road at a high rate of speed. The officers pursued the cycle and activated the Police car's emergency lights & siren. The rider of the motorcycle, a 23 year old Southampton man, failed to stop for Police and continued to travel South on Trimingham Road through the South Round-a-bout, making a right turn on to South Road. The Police vehicle continued to pursue the motorcycle west on South Road, with the rider overtaking traffic and causing oncoming vehicles to take evasive action. At the Paget traffic lights (junction of Middle Road & South Road) the motorcycle entered the Middle Road bound lane, only to make a sudden left turn into the South Road bound lane, causing a taxi to take evasive action. The Southampton man then made a sharp right turn down St. Paul's Lane and continued to travel west on Middle Road. He then made a sharp left turn on to Ord Road (S-Hill), narrowly missing a car and continued towards Southcote Road. As the motorcycle approached the junction with Southcote Road, the 23 year old rider braked suddenly. The pursuing Police vehicle attempted to avoid a collision, but was unable to, resulting in a damage only road traffic collision. The rider fell from the cycle and attempted to make good his escape on foot, but was eventually apprehended by officers on the Railway Trail. The 23 year old Southampton man was subsequently arrested, taken to Hamilton Police Station and detained. It is anticipated that he will appear in court in due course for dangerous driving, failing to stop for Police and using an unlicensed motorcycle.
