October 6 - Weekly Review

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, September 28th – Monday, October 5th 2009 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 17
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 26
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 7
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 13
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: Hamilton parish = 1, Devonshire = 1, Pembroke = 6, Warwick = 2, Southampton = 1 and Sandys parish = 2.

Most of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 pedal cycle also reported stolen during the period. Of the 13 vehicles reported stolen, 1 was subsequently recovered.

Update - Industrial Accident

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 39 year old Jonathan Willis of Paget, not Pembroke as previously indicated. Mr. Willis was the victim of an industrial accident at a Coney Island Road, Hamilton parish construction site where he became trapped under a forklift around 4pm Monday. He was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene by an on call physician. Inquiries into this incident are ongoing. The Bermuda Police Service extends sincere condolences to the family & friends of the deceased.

Injury RTC

At 6pm on Monday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on Paynters Road in Hamilton parish near the junction with Harrington Sound Road involving a car and a rental cycle. It appears that the rental cycle was traveling south on Paynters Road and the car was traveling in the opposite direction when the vehicles collided. The rider of the rental cycle, a 25 year old Baltimore woman (American visitor), sustained a shoulder injury and a laceration to her ankle. The driver of the car, a 46 year old St. George’s woman, was not injured. The rental cycle was extensively damaged while the car received moderate damage. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Damage Only RTC

Around 8:20am on Monday, Police attended a reported single vehicle damage only road traffic collision at the junction of Somerset Road and Cambridge Road in Sandys parish. It appears that a car was traveling north on Somerset Road when the driver, a 27 year old Sandys parish woman, lost control and collided with a utility pole. The utility pole then landed on top of the car. The Sandys parish woman was not injured; however the car was extensively damaged. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Police Week 2009

6 winners of the Police Week 2009 poster competition have been selected from the local primary & middle schools!

After approximately 100 entries from the island’s primary & middle schools, the six winners were selected by a committee based on their age appropriate artwork. The talented students have been invited to Police Headquarters in Prospect on Wednesday, October 7th to meet the Commissioner of Police and become honourary Commissioner for the day.

October 4th – October 10th

This year’s theme – Our Youth … Our Commitment; there are several community related events taking place during Police Week in keeping with our theme and we encourage all members of the public to come out and participate in the following events!

Tuesday, October 6, 2009 – Police Displays (11am Seniors Tea; 12 noon start)

The Bermuda Police Service puts its best on display for the public with various exhibits showcasing the various the various careers & opportunities available within the Service. To be held at Police Field, Prospect Devonshire.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009 – Beat the Retreat (9pm start)

Witness the pomp, pageantry & precision of the Bermuda Police Service as they march on Kings Square in St. George’s with the Bermuda Regiment Band & Corps of Drums as well as the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band. The Commissioner of Police and other dignitaries will be in attendance.

Friday, October 9, 2009 – Ex/Former Police Officers Memorial & Social

A short memorial service will take place at the Police cemetery followed by an informal get together of past & present Police officers in the Police Recreation Club.

Saturday, October 10, 2009 – Police Ball (6:30pm cocktails; 7:30pm start)

A formal night celebrating 130 years of policing in Bermuda will be held at the Fairmont Southampton Princess Resort. Tickets are $125.
