The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, August 17th - Monday August 24th 2009 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 25
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 45
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 5
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 24
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 4, Hamilton parish = 3, Smith’s parish = 2, Devonshire = 1, Pembroke = 8, Paget = 1, Southampton = 4 and Sandys parish = 1.

The majority of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 car also reported stolen during the period. Of the 24 vehicles reported stolen, 4 were subsequently recovered.

Robbery/Attempted Robbery

Recently, Police have received several reports of robberies in the areas of:

  • Middle Road/Ord Road, Paget
  • Harrington Sound Road, Smith’s parish
  • John Smith’s Bay, Smith’s parish and
  • Montpelier Road/Hesitation Lane, Devonshire which occurred between 4:30pm Monday and 4:30am Tuesday.

In addition, a report of an attempted robbery was received around 1:50am Tuesday in the area of North Shore Road/Palmetto Road, Devonshire. In all cases, the complainants (which included locals & visitors) were approached by unknown men riding a silver motorcycle. One of the suspects brandished a bladed article during the robberies; however, none of the complainants were injured. During the robberies the culprits made good their escape with a quantity of cash, jewelry and personal items. The complainant in the attempted robbery was able to escape the offenders. A 41 year old St. George’s man and a 29 year old St. George’s man have been arrested in connection with these matters. Inquiries are ongoing.
