Roads Policing Unit Statistics

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, October 6th – Monday, October 13th 2008 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 23
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 34
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 4
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 25
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 2, Hamilton parish = 2, Smith’s parish = 3, Pembroke = 11, Warwick = 1, Southampton = 2 and Sandy’s parish = 4.

The majority of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 car also stolen during the period. Of the 25 vehicles reported stolen 6 were subsequently recovered, including the car.

Flare Discharged Into House
Around 3:50pm on Monday, Police attended a report of a flare being discharged into a Sousa Estate Road, Devonshire residence. On arrival officers spoke with the complainant, a 56 year old Devonshire man, who stated that around 3:45pm that day he was sitting in his yard with a neighbour when he heard a loud noise and saw something streak past him into his home. The object bounced off a few walls inside the house before coming to a rest outside. It was then that the Devonshire man noticed that the object was a flare. There was only minor damage done to the home. It appears that the flare was accidently discharged by a 9 year old girl visiting a relative’s house in the neighbourhood.

The Bermuda Police Service would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that flares can be dangerous, even deadly if used improperly. All flares should be securely stored at all times and kept away from children.

Arrests & Tickets Issued in the Western Parishes
Over the weekend there was 1 person arrested for taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, 1 person arrested for possession of a controlled drug and 4 individuals arrested on outstanding warrants. There were also 22 tickets issued for speeding, 6 tickets issued for no driver’s license, 2 tickets issued for having an unlicensed vehicle, 2 tickets issued for not having vehicle insurance and 2 tickets issued for seatbelt offences.
Police Week 2008
During the week of October 26th to November 1st, the Bermuda Police Service will celebrate ‘Police Week’ - a week long series of events commemorating the Bermuda Police Service’s 129 years of service to Bermuda and its continuing commitment to the local community.

Several of these events are community oriented, and we would like to cordially invite all members of the public as well as the island’s school students to take part in the following activities:

Displays by some of our specialist units will take place on Police field in Prospect (just below Police Headquarters).

  • Commissioner for a Day - Wednesday, October 29th

The Bermuda Police Service is inviting all primary and middle school students to write an essay (maximum of 100 words) outlining why they would like to be Commissioner of Police for a Day. The eight best essays will be chosen by a committee and the winners will have the opportunity to ‘shadow’ the eight highest ranking members of the Police Service as they go about their daily duties.

  • Beating the Retreat – Wednesday, October 29th (8:30pm)

The Beating of the Retreat will take place on Front Street in the City of Hamilton. The Commissioner of Police and various dignitaries will be on hand for the traditional display by the Bermuda Regiment Band & Corps of Drums.

  • Police Open House - Friday, October 31st (10am – 2pm)

All three Police stations (Hamilton, Somerset & Southside) will be open to the public.
