At 3:20 this morning Police officers monitoring CCTV observed an auxiliary cycle with two people on it acting in a suspicious manner in the City of Hamilton. Police on mobile patrol were alerted to this and located a cycle fitting the description at the junction of Court Street and Dundonald Street. The vehicle was followed and it was observed committing a number of traffic offences. The officers, using emergency equipment, pursued the cycle along Elliot Street and Princess Street, while making repeated requests for the cycle to stop. The cycle finally came to a stop on Dundonald Street. The officers identified themselves as Police officers and asked the rider to turn off the cycle’s engine. The rider did not comply and an officer got out of the Police vehicle and approached the cycle from the front. The rider then drove towards the officer, who immediately apprehended the rider and was able to avoid injury. The passenger made good his escape on foot, while the rider, a 20 year old Devonshire man, was arrested after a violent struggle. During the violent struggle, an object fell to the ground. The object was recovered and found to be a loaded firearm, which was seized by Police. A subsequent search at Hamilton Police station revealed the man to be in possession of a number of twists of powder believed to be a controlled drug. The man remains in custody while investigations into the incident continue by the Serious Crime Unit.
The Commissioner of Police would like to commend all the officers involved in this incident for their valiant efforts in the arrest and subsequent recovery of a firearm.
