Superintendent Sean Field-Lament – “With the National Heroes’ Day holiday weekend almost upon us, the public can look forward to a host of social events, including carnival type activity starting Thursday, 15th June 2023 and ending on National Heroes’ Day, Monday 19th June 2023.

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) will maintain high visibility during these festivities.

We urge members of the public against engaging in criminal activity or anti-social behaviour during these parties, or any of the numerous other social gatherings set to take place during the holiday weekend.

Of particular note are three carnival themed events scheduled for the holiday Monday:

There will be two J’ouvert events, which take place between the hours of 3:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., followed by Revel de Road.

One J’ouvert will take place at Bernard’s Park between 3:00am and 9:00am. The other J’ouvert will take place at City Hall car park between 3:00am and 9:00am and will have a moving element to it.

The music and crowd will move off at 8:00am from City Hall, west on Church Street, north on Par-La-Ville Road on to Woodlands Road, taking the right on to Canal Road. The event will finish in the area of Bulls Head car park.

The Corporation of Hamilton and the Ministry of Public Works have issued traffic notices permitting the closure of the roads mentioned, during the event.

Next up will be Revel de Road. This will be in three stages:

•             (1st move) 12 noon - Starting at Dundonald Street next to Victoria Park, north on Cedar Avenue, east on Marsh Folly Road, east on Palmetto Road, stopping at Barkers Hill roundabout at 3:30pm.

•             (2nd move) 3:30pm – heading west on North Shore Road, south on Black Watch Pass, south on Marsh Folly Road and south on Cedar Avenue, stopping at Victoria Park at 7:30pm.

•             (3rd move)  8:30pm – heading south on Cedar Avenue, west on Victoria Street, south on Wesley Street, west on Church Street and north on Par-La-Ville Road, ending at BAA at 9:45pm. Music will continue until 11:30pm.

Motorists should expect delays and there will be traffic diversions as a result of road closures and large numbers of people expected to be in attendance. We ask that you exercise patience and caution. Event organisers will have marshals on the roads for these events, supported by the BPS where required.

It should be noted that although the scheduled carnival events have obtained noise permits, the BPS will still monitor noise levels and use authority under the law to address any noise related complaints, if necessary.

Members of the public planning to attend any of these events should travel with a group or in pairs, avoid parking or walking in dimly lit or isolated areas and let someone know of their whereabouts and when they plan to return.

The parked vehicles of patrons attending scheduled events should not obstruct any surrounding roads or driveways.

For those headed out on the water, please file a float plan. Do not go boating alone. Ensure your radio is working and all the requisite safety equipment on-board is up-to-date.

When swimming, do not swim alone and please ensure that your boat’s registration decal is current and prominently displayed.

Do not consume alcohol and drive, ride or operate a watercraft.

We also ask that you cooperate with our BPS officers, as we aim to ensure minimal disruption and that everyone is able to enjoy the holiday, without fear for their safety and wellbeing.

From a policing perspective, the public can expect road sobriety checkpoints starting the evening of Friday, 16th June through Monday, 19th June 2023 in all nine parishes.

Once again, don’t drive, ride or operate a watercraft intoxicated and have a plan to safely arrive at your intended destination after taking part in any of the celebrations.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all residents and visitors a safe holiday weekend and urge you to enjoy yourselves responsibly.”

With the official start of summer almost here, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is aware that a variety of public events are scheduled, at both outdoor and indoor venues, which may involve the sale and consumption of alcohol.

Bearing that in mind, the BPS offers the following advice to residents and visitors planning to attend any upcoming social gatherings.

Don’t drive, ride or operate a watercraft while intoxicated.

Don’t let your drink out of sight and don’t consume any drink left unattended.

Have a plan to get safely home, or to your chosen destination, after socialising.

Always be aware of your surroundings. If possible, attend and leave parties with friends you already know.

Be mindful of anything that might attract the unwanted attention of opportunistic thieves, like wearing expensive jewellery or being overly intoxicated.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and where possible, pay for purchases by credit or debit card.

If you must use an ATM, choose one that is well illuminated. Withdraw only the amount of cash you need. Shield the keypad to prevent anyone viewing your transaction and obtaining your PIN. Keep your receipt.

Notify the credit, debit card issuer immediately if either card is lost, stolen or suspicious transactions are noticed.

Unattended parked cars, trucks should be left in a well-lit area, with doors locked and windows closed. Similarly, unattended parked motorcycles should be left securely locked in a well-lit area. If possible, use a secondary motorcycle lock.

Do not approach any vehicle alone if there are suspicious people nearby.

It should be noted that BPS officers will continue making periodic visits to the island’s liquor licensed premises year round, to ensure compliance with relevant laws and to note any infractions. Again, members of the public are urged not to drive, ride or operate a watercraft while intoxicated and to think of their own safety as well as the safety of others, when out and about this summer.

The female injured in that serious road traffic collision which occurred in Southampton yesterday, Sunday, June 11th, sadly, has succumbed to her injuries.

The collision occurred shortly before 5:00 p.m. on Middle Road just west of Evans Bay.

The woman, 46-year-old Angela Meyer, was the pillion passenger on a livery cycle ridden by her 47- year-old husband.

The couple who were visiting from Canada, were traveling in the westbound lane when the rider lost control of the cycle and crossed into the path of a motorcar traveling in the eastbound lane and the two vehicles collided.

The visiting couple were transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where Mrs. Meyer was pronounced dead, a short time later. Her husband was attended to for his injuries and discharged.

This marks the island’s seventh road fatality this year.

None of the occupants of the motorcar were injured.

Police can also identify the island’s sixth road traffic fatality for the year as, 38-year-old Filipino guest worker, Jerry Colantes.

Mr. Colantes was involved in a single vehicle collision which took place shortly before 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, 10th June.

He was reportedly riding a motorcycle east on North Shore Road, Devonshire, just east of the junction with Dock Hill, when he lost control of the bike and collided with a wall. He was thrown over the wall on impact and down an embankment.

He sustained a serious head injury and was attended to at the scene by EMTs before being transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Shortly before 7:25 p.m. on Sunday, June 11th, 2023, police received a report of a single-vehicle traffic collision on Harrington Sound Road, near the junction with Broken Hill, Smith's.

Initial information suggested a motorcycle was travelling east on Harrington Sound Road, when upon approaching Broken Hill, the male rider collided with a concrete wall. He sustained serious facial injuries but remained conscious. A female pillion passenger, sustained minor injuries.

Both victims were attended to at the scene by EMTs before being transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for further treatment of their injuries.

Traffic was routed away from the area where the collision occurred while police processed the scene. East bound traffic was diverted onto Devil’s Hole Hill at the junction with Harrington Sound Road, while traffic headed west, was diverted onto Paynter’s Road at the junction with Harrington Sound Road.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision or know of the circumstances which may have led to it, is asked to call the main police number, 295-0011 or provide the information via the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) Community Reporting Portal at https://portal.police.bm.

Shortly before 5pm on Sunday 11th June, police and other first responders were dispatched to the scene of a serious two vehicle collision, involving a livery cycle and a motorcar, on Middle Road just west of Evans Bay, Southampton.

An investigation surrounding the circumstance of this collision has commenced, with initial information suggesting that a livery cycle with two people, was traveling in the westbound lane when the male rider lost control of the cycle and crossed into the path of a motorcar traveling in the eastbound lane.

Both the man and his female pillion passenger have been transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment. The woman is believed to have suffered life threatening injuries, while the man has suffered a leg injury.

The driver of the car was not reported to be injured.

Traffic is currently being diverted around the scene with single lane control in place, while police process the scene.

Shortly before 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, 10th June, 2023, police and other first responders were dispatched to a reported single vehicle road traffic collision involving a motorcycle, near the junction of North Shore Road and Dock Hill, Devonshire.

The area of the collision was closed off to vehicular traffic for approximately three hours while the scene was processed by Traffic Collision Investigators and the Forensic Support Unit.

Two firemen from the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS) have just completed a four-week driver training course with the Bermuda Police Service (BPS).

Firefighters Ryan DeSilva and Alex Swan have both successfully completed the course, under the instruction of Driver Training Instructor Police Constable Bianca Glasford. Both men are already trained fire truck drivers. However, having successfully completed this course, enhances their emergency response driving capabilities.

The course came together as a result of the BFRS reaching out to the BPS for assistance in training some of their drivers, with the ultimate goal of having these drivers trained at the trainer level and become BFRS driving instructors.

When asked how they felt about doing the course, both DeSilva and Swan agreed, they have learned a lot and noticed a considerable change in the standard of their driving. The pair are keen on sharing their newly acquired knowledge with their colleagues. They are also very eager to get on the next Police Advanced Driving Course.

The course officially concluded Friday morning, 9^th June 2023, with Acting Commissioner of Police Na’imah Astwood giving closing remarks at a roundtable discussion, that included  senior firefighters, Acting Divisional Officer Jay Donawa and Acting Divisional Officer Leonard Davis, as well as Police Driver Training staff, Sgt. Michael Thomas and PC Bianca Glasford.

In her remarks, Acting Commissioner Astwood mentioned that she was pleased with the collaboration, stating, “The agencies could benefit considerably from each other, by sharing training resources.” Mrs. Astwood also strongly supports the idea of further collaborative efforts between the police and other agencies. Her sentiments were echoed by the two attending Acting Divisional Officers, who look forward to more joint training opportunities.

The BFRS is not the only agency to have benefited from the police driving courses. On previous occasions, the Royal Bermuda Regiment have put soldiers on the same course.

The Bermuda Police Service is seeking the assistance of the public with its investigation into an assault and robbery which took place in the City of Hamilton.

Around 10:55 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7th, 2023, police attended Bermudiana Road, Hamilton, following a report of a fight involving a group of males.

Upon arrival, officers ascertained that a 25-year-old male and a 24-year-old male were walking along Front Street from the area of the Front Yard establishment and were followed by two other men, to the area of Bermudiana Road.

The two male victims were set upon and assaulted by those men.

They sustained injures which are deemed to be non-life threatening, nor did they require medical treatment.

During the confrontation, a chain and wrist bracelet were stolen from one of the victims.

Both suspects were arrested a short time after, and are currently being detained at the Hamilton Police Station, pending further investigations.

Around 11:17am Thursday, 8th June 2023, Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service (BFRS) personnel came across what appears to be a single vehicle collision on North Shore Road near the junction with Jennings Road, Smith’s, involving a tourist on a rental cycle.

The Bermuda Police Service responded to the collision scene shortly after BFRS personnel encountered the incident.

While the exact circumstances remain unclear at this time, it was reported that the injured party, a female tourist and her husband were traveling in the eastbound lane on separate rental cycles, when the woman lost control of her vehicle and as a result, she went over an embankment.

The woman was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, where she is being treated for multiple injuries.

Traffic headed east was diverted over Jennings Road, while traffic headed west was allowed to continue through in the westbound lane, while the scene was processed.

Normal traffic flow has since resumed in the area.

On Tuesday, May 23rd, 2023, The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) commenced an operation, dubbed operation “AZKABAN.”

The BPS Crime Division, supported by the Tactical and Community Policing Divisions, commenced this operation in response to the spate of smash and grab burglaries committed over the past couple of months.

On Tuesday, May 30th, the team arrested a 46-year-old man, for a number of burglaries which occurred predominantly at service stations. A day later, another man, aged 36, was also arrested in connection with these matters.

Several warrants were executed at residences in Smiths and Hamilton Parishes, where a number of items connected to the burglaries were discovered and seized. A stolen motorcycle was also recovered.

The 46-year-old suspect has been charged before the courts and, pleaded guilty to a number of these burglaries. The 36-year-old has been released on police bail.

On Tuesday 6th June, 2023, the team again executed several search warrants in the Pembroke, Devonshire and Smiths Parishes, where several items believed to be stolen goods were seized. Two stolen motorcycles were also recovered.

Four persons between the ages of 15 and 19, who police suspect were involved in the smash and grab burglaries in the City of Hamilton and Sandys Parish, were arrested.

A fifth individual was arrested for suspicion of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply, after police discovered a quantity of controlled drugs during a search of his property.  A large quantity of cash believed to be the proceeds of criminality, was also seized.

Detective Superintendent (Ag) Sherwin Joseph, who is currently in charge of the Crime Division stated: “We believe that we have successfully disrupted and dismantled two distinct groups of individuals that were responsible for the spate of commercial breaks in the City of Hamilton and environs.”

“A number of items suspected to be stolen goods have been recovered, and we are now working with local businesses and members of our community to assist with identifying these items”.

No further information will be provided at this time.

The BPS Criminal Investigation Unit continues investigations into these matters.
