Contraband Seized, Suspects Arrested

On Thursday 9th November, 2023, the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) in conjunction with the Royal Bermuda Regument Coast Guard (RBRCG) and Bermuda Maritime Operations conducted a joint peration dubbed, “Operation ARKAB.”

The BPS Drugs Unit were called in after members of the RBRCG with the assistance other police officers and Bermuda Maritime Operations, intercepted two vessels in Bermuda waters.

Several packages suspected to contain the controlled drugs cocaine and cannabis, with an estimated street value of over twenty million dollars, were recovered.

The BPS, Tactical Division and Drug Unit officers, later arrested six men in relation to this matter, and executed several search warrants in Pembroke and Warwick Parishes.

A Royal Bermuda Regiment Spokesman said, “The success of this operation is a demonstration of the investment in the capability by the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard since its inception in 2020.”

“With the support of our partner agencies, the RBR Coast Guard works around the clock to make Bermuda waters safer and to protect Bermuda’s interests.”

A BPS Spokesman added, "We continue to collaborate with the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard and the Bermuda Maritime Operations Center to keep our island free from illicit drugs.”

The BPS Drugs Unit continues investigations into this matter.

11 Community Policing Division Officers Receive Various Awards of Recognition for Good Work

11 officers from Community Policing Division receive various awards of recognition for good work from Acting Superintendent Jerome Laws.

Sergeant 2394 Jerry Waterman, Constable 2553 Bryden Pedro, Constable 2589 Kyrun Zuill, Constable 2579 Jennifer Suter and Constable 2586 Raeshun Robinson, Constable 2561 Kayjuna Lema and Constable 2564 Andre Burgess each received a Superintendent’s Award for their diligence, teamwork and decision making, which led to the arrest of a burglary suspect, along with the recovery of stolen property, drugs, stolen motorcycles and illegal dogs.

Sergeant 2140 Kimberly Cowper, Constable 2548 Shandora Burrows and Constable 2544 Ryan Swan each received a Superintendent’s Award for their diligence, teamwork and decision making, which led to the arrest and conviction of an arsonist.

And Cconstable 2524 George Edmead received a Letter of Good Work for his commitment, dedication, and teamwork as a member of ‘A Watch’.

 

 

 

Fatal Road Traffic Collision in Sandys Parish [Updated]

Around 10:50 p.m. on Thursday, 9 November 2023 police and other first responders were dispatched to a report of a serious two vehicle collision on Somerset Road near the junction with Clyde Best Lane, Sandys, involving a car and a motorcycle.

Details are limited at this time however, it is believed that the vehicles were traveling in opposite directions when the collision occurred.

The female rider of the motorcycle was conveyed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment, but sadly she has succumbed to her injuries. The male driver of the car was not reported to be injured and has since been arrested in connection with the incident.

Traffic is being diverted at Long Bay Lane and Gilbert Lane while police process the scene.

Update: Monday, 13th NovemberThe Bermuda Police Service (BPS) can now confirm the identity of the victim in that fatal road traffic collision which occurred around 10:50 p.m. on Thursday, November 9th, 2023, as 48-year-old Filipino National, Lovella Cruz.

Ms. Cruz was riding her motorcycle east along Somerset Road, Sandys Parish, near the junction with Cricket Lane, when a motorcar traveling in the opposite direction crossed the centre line and the vehicles collided.

Ms. Cruz was transported via ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment for her injuries but sadly, was pronounced dead a short time later.

The motorcar driver, a 35-year-old Bermudian male, was not injured in the collision. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired.

The investigation into this, the thirteenth road fatality for this year continues. Anyone with any information on this matter, is asked to contact Sergeant Anton Gilbert of the Roads Policing Unit on 717-2338 or via e-mail, agilbert@bps.bm.

Confirmed Firearm Incident on Factory Lane: No Reported Injuries

Around 9:40pm Wednesday, 8th November 2023, police officers responded to a 911 call.

The caller reported that a gunshot was fired outside their Factory Lane, Pembroke home.

On arrival, it was confirmed that a firearm was discharged.

No injuries were reported.

The scene was forensically processed and inquiries continue.

Detectives are following some early leads and are appealing for additional individuals with relevant information regarding this non-injury firearm incident.

In particular, investigators are keen to speak with Factory Lane, Pembroke residents who may have seen or captured on their outdoor security cameras any suspicious individuals or suspicious activity in the neighbourhood Wednesday evening, 8th November 2023.

Investigation Regarding Indecent Exposure Incident Being Progressed

The investigation continues into the act of indecent exposure which occurred at the National Sports Center over the weekend. Bermuda Police Service is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information on what transpired, to contact Acting Detective Superintendent, Sherwin Joseph on 717-2158 or, via email jsherwin@bps.bm.

There has so far been no formal report of this incident made to police.

However, the matter is being progressed.

We are interested in speaking with anyone who may have been at the tent where the incident occurred and who would have recorded what happened.

We are particularly interested in speaking with the female seen in the video posted to social media, attempting to stop the actions of the male suspect.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Antoine Daniels stated, “This matter is being treated with the same level of seriousness as all acts of indecent exposure in any public place. While police officers were in the general vicinity of where the incident occurred, it was not brought to their attention.”

“That notwithstanding, immediately upon learning of the incident, an investigation was commenced.”

Suspect Arrested in Connection With the Death of Marco Warren

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) can confirm a 48-year-old-male has been arrested and charged in relation to the investigation into the death of Mr. Marco Warren.

The suspect, was this morning arrested upon turning himself in at the Hamilton Police Station, after being contacted by investigators.

A court appearance is anticipated in due course.

No further information will be provided at this time.

Detective Inspector Jason Smith who led the investigation into this matter said. “I wish to thank those members of the public who have supported the investigative team by providing information which assisted us in making this arrest.

However the investigation into the death of Mr. Warren remains ongoing and members of the public with any information on this matter are again asked to make contact with us.”

Rugby Classic Incident [Updated]

The Bermuda Police Service has begun inquiries into an incident of indecent exposure which is alleged to have occurred at the north field of the National Sports Centre, Devonshire.

While we are aware of a video clip of the reported incident circulating on social media, we urge anyone with information related to this matter to please call the main police number 295-0011.

We also ask that should you receive the video in question that you do not forward it on.
