Assistant Commissioner of Police

Operations Portfolio

Assistant Commissioner Martin Weekes joined the Bermuda Police Service (BPS) in 1988, after previously serving with Kent Constabulary in the UK from 1977.

Throughout his career, Martin has held a wide variety of positions within the Service but is perhaps best remembered as the Parish Constable for Smith’s Parish, where he served for many years. He also made a lasting impact as the Schools Officer for the East End of the island, where he was well-known by many young people as their G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) instructor at Clearwater Middle School. Additionally, he served as an Outward Bound Instructor on Paget Island during the summer months.

As he advanced in rank, Martin served as Inspector and later Chief Inspector, during which time he was posted as the Station Commander at St. George’s and Southside Police Stations. He was subsequently promoted to Superintendent, overseeing all of the island’s police stations and implementing a Problem-Oriented Policing with Partnerships approach to community policing.

In his current role as Assistant Commissioner (Operations), Martin oversees both Community Policing and Tactical Policing units.

Martin is a strong advocate for mentoring and coaching young Bermudian officers, recognizing them as the future leaders of the Service. He firmly believes that modeling the behavior expected of officers is the most effective way to instill the principles of fairness and restraint that should always define the community-based policing model that has been developed in recent years.

Martin holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Policing and Police Studies from the University of Portsmouth in the UK and a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership (QCF) from the Chartered Management Institute.

In 2014, Martin was admitted as a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and earned the designation of Chartered Manager. In 2021, he graduated with Distinction from the College of Policing’s Senior Command Course in the UK.
