October 11 - Daily Report

Update: Fatal RTC - The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 31 year old Earlston Kavon Bailey Smith. Around 4am on Monday, Police & first responders attended the scene of a single vehicle road traffic collision at the junction of Crow Lane and Corkscrew Hill in Pembroke. As a result they came upon a 31 year old Southampton man in a non-responsive state a few feet away from his motorcycle which was extensively damaged. He was later pronounced dead at the scene by an on call physician at 4:41am. The Bermuda Police Service extends condolences to the family & friends of the deceased. Any witnesses to this collision or anyone with any information is encouraged to contact PC Timothy Evelyn of the Roads Policing Unit on 299- 4390.

The death of Earlston Kavon Bailey Smith marks the 10th road fatality for 2010.

Burglary

Around 4:10am on Monday, Police responded to a report of a burglary at the West Pembroke Pentecostal Church. It appeared that the culprit gained entry into the church and stole a safe. With the assistance of additional Police units, a suspect was located. He attempted to flee on foot but was subsequently apprehended. The safe was recovered. A court appearance for the alleged culprit, a 49 year old Pembroke man, is anticipated in due course.

Robbery

Around 3pm on Sunday, Police responded to a report of a robbery on Reid Street in the City of Hamilton. It appears that the victim, a 62 year old Pembroke man, gave an unknown man outside the Phoenix Store a small quantity of cash and was accosted when he indicated he didn’t have any more to give. The suspect managed to take a quantity of cash from the Pembroke man before making good his escape via Queen Street. Apparently the victim was not injured. The suspect was described as wearing black clothing and a dark coloured cap. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011.

Around 3:30pm on Sunday, Police were on mobile patrol in the Pitts Bay Road, Pembroke area when they observed a robbery in progress and immediately took action. The suspect was riding a motorcycle and attempted to elude officers; however he was pursued, subsequently located and arrested. The victims, a visiting American couple were not injured and their property, a bag containing personal items, was recovered. A court appearance for the alleged culprit, a 52 year old Pembroke man, is anticipated in due course.

Weekend Activity

Over the weekend there were 6 people arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and 5 reported burglaries. There were also 6 reported damage only road traffic collisions, 3 reported road traffic collisions resulting in injury and 10 vehicles reported taken without their owners’ consent.

So far this year 239 individuals have been arrested on suspicion of impaired driving; an increase of 22% over the same period last year.


All incidents are under investigation.
