The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to drive as well as ride responsibly on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and make sure any children traveling in the vehicle are appropriately restrained. Those traveling on motorcycles should always fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.
During the week of Monday, January 11th – Monday, January 18th 2010 there were:
- Reported Injury Collisions = 16
- Reported Damage Only Collisions = 34
- Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 9
- Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 10
- Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 1, Hamilton parish = 2, Smith’s parish = 1, Pembroke = 2, Warwick = 1, Southampton = 1 and Sandys = 2.
Most of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 car also reported stolen during the period. Of the 10 vehicles reported stolen, 3 were subsequently recovered, including the car.
Vehicle Fire
Around 1:20am today, Police attended a reported vehicle fire on Horseshoe Road in Southampton. On arrival officers saw a van engulfed in flames. The Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service also attended the scene and subsequently extinguished the fire. There were no injuries; however the van was extensively damaged. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
Injury RTC
Around 6:45pm on Monday, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on North Shore Road in Hamilton parish near the junction with Workmen’s Lane involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian. It appears that the pedestrian, a 68 year old Hamilton parish man, was attempting to cross the road in the area. A car in the eastbound lane stopped to allow the Hamilton parish man to cross; however a motorcycle traveling west on North Shore Road collided with him. The 68 year old man reportedly sustained head & internal injuries while the rider of the motorcycle, a 23 year old Hamilton parish woman, reportedly sustained facial injuries and complained of pain to her abdomen, right elbow and right leg. EMTs from the Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service also attended the scene. Both injured parties were taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The motorcycle received minor damage. The Hamilton parish man is currently in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
