Thu, 2005-09-22

Around 3:40pm on Thursday, Police were conducting laser speed checks on Middle Road in Southampton near the Port Royal Golf Course when a man on a motorcycle traveling east was clocked at 57 km/h. A Police motorcyclist pursued and stopped the rider, a 44 year old Pembroke man, and informed him of the offence. The Pembroke man denied speeding, even after being shown the laser speed unit with the 57 km/h reading still on it, and threatened the officer. Further inquiries revealed the 44 year old had an outstanding warrant and he was arrested. At this time another officer arrived in a marked Police car to transport the Pembroke man to Somerset Police Station; however during the journey, he struck the officer driving the Police car in the head several times and continued to make threatening remarks. The 44 year old Pembroke man was subsequently detained at Somerset Police Station. Inquiries into this incident are underway.
