6th Road Fatality

The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 77 year old Gladwin Johnston of Warwick. At 12:30pm on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury at the junction of South Road and Upland Lane in Warwick involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian. It appears that around 12:20pm that day the victim attempted to walk across South Road when a motorcycle, which was traveling west on South Road, collided with him. The rider of the motorcycle, a 36 year old Warwick man, was not injured. The 77 year old Warwick man, who did not initially appear to be injured, was taken to KEMH via ambulance for observation; however he was subsequently detained for treatment of a fractured hip. Mr. Johnston remained in hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injury and was pronounced dead at 5:26pm on Wednesday, March 21, 2007. The Bermuda Police Service would like to extend its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. The death of Gladwin Johnston marks the 6th road fatality for 2007.

Injury RTC

Around 2:55am on Friday, March 23, 2007 Police attended a reported single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury on Frog Lane in Devonshire. On arrival officers observed the female victim lying unconscious on the sidewalk with two members of the public attempting to assist her. It appears that the woman was riding her motorcycle north on Frog Lane when she lost control and collided with the sidewalk. As a result her motorcycle remained lying in the road. The victim was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment of broken arms, a broken leg and facial abrasions. A short time after the initial collision, a car traveling north on Frog Lane collided with the cycle, which was still in the road. The cycle was extensively damaged. The driver of the car, a 41 year old Devonshire woman, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. She was taken to Somerset Police Station and detained after failing the alco-analyser test. Inquiries are ongoing. The victim is currently in stable condition on a general ward recovering from her injuries. Police are appealing for any witnesses to the initial collision to contact PC Tavoris Douglas on 295-0011.
