Injury RTC/Impaired Driving

Around 12:10am today, Police attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury on North Shore Road in Pembroke near the junction with Band Room Lane involving a car and a motorcycle. It appears that the motorcycle was traveling west on North Shore Road and the car was traveling in the opposite direction when the car overtook a bus also traveling east and collided with the motorcycle. The rider of the motorcycle, a 33 year old Smiths parish man, sustained a broken right leg and right wrist. He was taken to KEMH via ambulance for treatment. The driver of the car, a 31 year old Devonshire man, was not injured; however he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. The motorcycle was extensively damaged while the car received front end damage. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

During the month of September, there were a total of 251 road traffic collisions; 0 fatal, 88 resulting in injury and 163 resulting in damage to vehicles. There were a total of 93 people injured; 80 slightly injured and 13 seriously injured. The main causes of road traffic collisions for the month were:

In comparison – During September 2006, there were a total of 224 road traffic collisions; 1 fatal, 77 resulting in injury and 146 resulting in damage to vehicles. There were a total of 89 people injured; 1 fatally injured, 72 slightly injured and 16 seriously injured. The main causes of road traffic collisions for September 2006 were:

  1. Inattention (76 incidents)
  2. Inexperience (25 incidents)
  3. Overtaking Improperly (18 incidents)
  4. Following Too Close (15 incidents)
  5. Reversing Carelessly (12 incidents)
  6. Bad Road Surface (wet) (7 incidents)

There were also 5 collisions that resulted in an arrest for impaired driving in September 2006.
