Handbag Snatch

Around 11:35am on Tuesday, Police received a report of a handbag snatch. The victims, a 73 year old man, a 68 year old woman and a 43 year old man (husband, wife and son respectively) who appear to be Belgian visitors to the island, stated that earlier they were traveling to Mid Ocean beach on two rental cycles when an unknown man on a motorcycle overtook the son & mother (who were riding on the same rental cycle) as they approached the junction of South Road and Paynters Road. The visitors then realized that the suspect, described as a black male of slim build, had removed the 68 year old woman’s canvas handbag from their rental cycle’s basket. The son attempted to give chase; however, the suspect made good his escape. The handbag contained a quantity of cash, a Fuji digital camera and personal items. The visitors were not injured. Inquiries into this incident are underway. Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact the St. George’s Criminal Investigation Unit on 293-2222.
