Roads Policing Unit Statistics

The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the motoring public to slow down and to use care, caution and courtesy on the island’s roads. Additionally, we urge those traveling in cars to use their seatbelts at all times and those traveling on motorcycles to fasten their helmets and avoid making a third lane.

During the week of Monday, August 11th – Monday, August 18th 2008 there were:

  • Reported Injury Collisions = 27
  • Reported Damage Only Collisions = 35
  • Arrests on Suspicion of Impaired Driving = 3
  • Vehicles Reported Taken Without Their Owners’ Consent = 17
  • Number of vehicles reported stolen by parish: St. George’s = 2, Hamilton parish = 1, Pembroke = 8, Warwick = 2, Southampton = 2 and Sandy’s parish = 2.

The majority of the vehicles removed were either auxiliary cycles or motorcycles, with 1 car and 1 pedal cycle also stolen during the period. Of the 17 vehicles reported stolen 3 were subsequently recovered.

Theft

Around 8:30am on Monday, Police received a report of a theft from a Wesley Street, Pembroke premises which is currently under construction. The complainant stated that sometime between 3pm Sunday and 8am Monday, an unknown culprit gained entry into the building and stole a quantity of tools from a tool box on the site. Inquiries into this incident are underway.

Update: Witness Appeal - Princess Street Shooting
At 9:26pm on Monday, August 18, 2008 Police responded to a report of gun shots being fired in the area of Princess Street in Pembroke. As a result, a 22 year old Pembroke man sustained a non-life threatening leg injury and is being treated at KEMH. Initial reports suggest that a motorcycle entered Princess Street from Dundonald Street and rode past the victim, who was standing with a group of individuals at the time. Shots were fired, the 22 year old Pembroke man was injured and the motorcycle and its occupants made good their escape towards the Ewing Street area. Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses or anyone with any information about this incident to contact Police on 299-4315 or the confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 1-800-623-8477.
