The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 38 year old Vernell Eugene Smith of Sandy’s parish. Around 9:55am on Sunday, Mr. Smith was riding a motorcycle traveling north on Somerset Road in Sandy’s parish when he attempted to overtake a car and lost control, colliding with a wall. He was rushed to KEMH via ambulance with serious injuries and was subsequently pronounced dead at 10:32am on Sunday by an on call physician at the hospital. The Bermuda Police Service extends our sincere condolences to the family & friends of the deceased. Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses to this collision to contact PC Greg Battersbee or PC Janeal Parson at the Somerset Police Station on 234-1010.

The death of Mr. Vernell Smith marks the 15th road fatality for 2008.

Arrest

A civilian employee of the Bermuda Police Service as a result of an act of dishonesty was arrested and put before the courts today. Internal disciplinary proceedings are now underway and the appropriate protocols are being followed at this time. The Bermuda Police Service considers this a serious breach of trust and holds our employees to the same standard as the public in which we serve. New systems are in place to ensure that the public’s property is safe while it is in the care of our environments.

Weekend Activity

Over the weekend there were 4 people arrested on suspicion of impaired driving and 10 reported burglaries. There were also 12 reported damage only road traffic collisions, 12 reported road traffic collisions resulting in injury and 9 vehicles reported taken without their owners’ consent.
