Hurricane Katrina Relief Scams

Mon, 2005-09-05

Unfortunately, after many disasters there are efforts to try and steal money that was given to assist with the recovery. The Fraud Unit is aware of reports from overseas that indicate a number of bogus websites are being set up, with the aim of soliciting donations to assist with the disaster caused by Hurricane Katrina in the U.S.A. These websites are fraudulent.

Before donating on-line, the Bermuda Police Service recommends that members of the public:

  • Validate the website – if in doubt refer to the FEMA website for authentic charities.
  • Avoid using unknown and/or unofficial websites – consider donating through established sites such as the American Red Cross, United Way, Salvation Army and other known and established charities.
  • Practice basic internet security and safeguard your personal and banking details.
