City of Hamilton Incident: Two Students Arrested, One Officer Injured

Fri, 2018-12-14

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) is aware of the video footage being circulated around social media showing police interaction with a group of students and it is not a complete characterization of everything that took place.

For context, around 4:10pm Thursday, December 13th Police Support Unit (PSU) officers were on patrol in the City of Hamilton after a report of an altercation involving school students.

The officers were near Victoria Park when they encountered a 16 year old male student shouting offensive language. The teen was spoken to about his behaviour, but continued to use offensive language and was arrested.

Several of his schoolmates then approached as officers attempted to secure the 16 year old in a police vehicle.

All officers involved tried to calm the situation. However the students began to get more boisterous and push police, with one student elbowing an officer in the eye, injuring the officer.

A 15 year old male student was also detained after attempting to intervene in the first arrest. Both young men were taken to Hamilton Police Station and later released on police bail.

The injured officer was subsequently treated at the hospital and discharged.

A file is being prepared regarding the incident and the two students are expected to appear before juvenile court in due course.

In the coming days the BPS will be liaising with the relevant school officials and parents/guardians of the students involved to minimize a recurrence.

Scam Alert: Beware of Unknown Sellers Offering Merchandise Online

The Bermuda Police Service (BPS) would like to remind members of the public to remain vigilant when making any purchases online.

Two recent reported scams involved a smart TV and a laptop respectively posted for sale on a local online classifieds site. In each case the transaction between the local resident and the alleged seller was conducted via e-mail.

The alleged seller of the TV requested payment through MoneyGram, while the alleged seller of the laptop asked for payment in iTunes gift cards.

The BPS continues to encourage residents to be extremely cautious in responding to internet merchandise offers from unknown sellers or unknown business entities and to be especially wary of responding to any person requesting payment in cash or gift cards using popular free e-mail addresses such as Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Outlook etc.

Many of the local websites carrying classified advertisements already display a warning message on their home page in relation to these types of scams, as con artists continue to post on local ‘.bm’ and ‘.com’ websites.

Any incidents of suspected internet fraud should be reported to the Financial Crime Unit on telephone number 247-1757 or via the e-mail address fraud2@bps.bm.
