Advisory Regarding Recent Phone Scam

Wed, 2021-11-24

The Bermuda Police Service Crime Unit and the 211 call centre, have recently been receiving numerous reports from seniors, who say they are being contacted via phone by an individual identifying themselves as a representative of One Communications Limited and requesting personal information.

Acting Detective Inspector, Clifford Roberts, of the Criminal Investigation Unit Specialist Investigations Crime Division, explained, “The senior is then asked to sign into their electronic device (laptop, iPad) allowing the caller access to conduct a supposed virus security check. Once the unsuspecting senior does so, the scammer is able to gain access to the victim’s personal information, including their banking information; eventually transferring monies from the victim’s bank account to an overseas account. In one instance, tens of thousands of dollars.”

Should you be contacted by someone claiming to be from One Communications suggesting your electronic device may have been compromised by a virus and they are calling to assist with the problem, you are advised to immediately end the conversation.

Do not provide your personal information.

If possible, record the caller’s number and immediately report it to police by calling, 211 or make a report online.
